2 out of 5 stars Just use Windows Media Player for playback   May 13, 2007

Looks like an interesting peice of software but it did not fix the screen overlay problem found on the OEM version shipped by Dell. In the end, Windows Media 9.0 fixed the issues I had with playing DVDs on my high end laptop. Probably a great tool for video editing but adds little value for just videa playback.

Only works sometimes on laptop. Seems to lockup and I have to reboot my computer. Some movies seem to work fine, while others I have trouble with.

Installlation closed down all applications at end, have never seen that in 100's of other program installation. Not comforting!

Since WinDVD installation Windows Media Player Blue Screens (with Stop Error) while playing certain .mpg files. Would you want to give up your Win Media Player or loose your work while clicking accidentally or not on an Mpeg file? Unacceptable!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good DVD Playback software   February 12, 2006

I first used a Demo of WinDVD and at that time, it was awesome as I hadn't used DVD playback software before at the time. My only quibble with it is that the sound is very low and no matter what buttons and knobs I fiddle with, the sound always remains quite low. It may just be my computer however - although for other programs the sound is perfect. The main reason I got WinDVD was that it's great for making screencaptures. They're very clear and a good large size. For that purpose, I give it 5 stars. The best part of the software is the Interactual player. Now THAT's a great DVD playback software. The sound is perfect with that.

5 out of 5 stars A superior media player, that outpreforms the rest...   August 4, 2005

I've used WinDVD 4,6 and now 7 platinum versions. I'm impressed. It will play files that neither Real nor Windows Media Player will play. Additionaly, say you're downloading a movie and you pause it (and you have a fragmented media file which most players will not play because it is not complete)... WinDVD will play it while Real and Windows will not.

Also, I bought the new Los Loney Boys CD, which came with some fierce copy protection... It wouldn't play on my computer at all... I tried Real Player, Windows Media, Roxio, Creative.... and alas, WinDVD played it.

The benefits: Well, it plays every media file type, you can pan, zoom... and some better features are the Quick Capture button, where you can pause your movie, and take a quick picture of the screen. Have you ever watched a movie and said, "Man, that would make a good background for my pc."?, now you can. Also, you can take quick clips, a short clip of the movie, any part you want, and save it to your PC.

It plays CDs that Most other mainstream media players could not or would not.

As a PC junkie, I'm impressed with its ability to play many things that most other media players wont. You won't find the difficulties you find in other players.

The cons: High price! About 80 dollars. The earlier versions, 4,5,6 have pretty much the same features, but the newer versions seem to use less memory and have a few more options.

Seriously consider this as your next all around media viewer.
