5 out of 5 stars finally, a speedy Norton product!   November 30, 2008

I had used Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security for many years (2003, 2004, 2005, etc.), but each new version seemed to get slower and slower. Finally I gave up and switched to ZoneLabs' ZoneAlarm security suite for a couple years. ZoneAlarm gave me much better performance for a couple versions, until lately -- when it began slowing down my system, hogging resources, and prompting me for things it shouldn't have been. So halfway through my current ZoneAlarm subscription, I decided I needed to dump it and get something else.

I checked out all sorts of reviews, read what Consumer Reports had to say, and did a demo of several products. I was VERY skeptical when I heard Norton Internet Security 2009 was supposed to be fast, lean, and easy to use -- because from my past experience with Symantec products, I had learned that Norton was slow and a big pain.

I've been running Norton Internet Security 2009 for 45 days now, and I'm amazed at how great this program is. It's not a resource hog. It's easy to use. And the number of prompts it gives you is minimal. I'm quite impressed.

Getting Norton Internet Security 2009 is the best software decision I've made in the past year. My system is running so much faster. According to the resource monitor, Norton usually uses 0% or 1% of my system resources. Finally, a speedy Norton product!

5 out of 5 stars HUGE improvement over Norton Internet Security 2008   November 29, 2008

I wrote in my review of Norton Internet Security 2008 that I used the product - but despised it. The hit to my system's resources was just too great, and I turned much of it off as a result.

The 2009 version is MUCH faster - to the point where I am leaving all options enabled. The hit to the system appears to be minimal. The user interface is simpler and less confusing also. Big improvements all around.

Be aware that the engines underlying Internet Security 2009 and Norton 360 are reported to be different, with 360 using the older version (i.e., performance problems).

5 out of 5 stars A Big improvement over previous versions.   November 19, 2008

I had quit using Norton for the last few of years. I needed a new Internet Security Suite and Norton 2009 was rated at or near the top of all the ratings I checked. Norton did especially well with independent lab tests. (There are so many companies trying to look independent, so it takes some effort to find truly independent tests.)
Norton found a "Trojan" my old Suite did Not find (Kaspersky). It also Scans much faster.

4 out of 5 stars Still tough on crime but easier on the users   November 16, 2008

I do computer training and light technical work for small offices and home users. I used to recommend Norton, but in recent years it had caused so many problems, from slowing down the machine to requiring daunting re-installs, that I advised many clients to just use a free anti-virus and the built-in firewalls and hope for the best. I was encouraged to try again based on good reviews and have not been disappointed. It is fast and does its work in the background without calling attention to itself. Norton always handled bugs about as well as anyone, it was just that the users got beat up too.

I've used the Norton utilities for many years. Previous versions always did what I wanted \ needed at the expense of slowed performance. Not so for the 2009 Internet Security suite. This package does everything it is supposed to do without bogging down the system -- you hardly know it's running. I am an A+ Certified computer professional and know a little about computer systems. I am glad to see Symantec finally getting their program straightened out! Speed AND effectivness! I would recommend this product to anyone.
