Fantastic game. December 3, 2008 I agree with most of the reviews here so I also will not beat a dead horse. The only thing I found strange was that they included a printed short story and a strategy guide BUT I had to print out the user manual.
I would have liked to have had at least a 1 or 2 page shortcut sheet included. This is not the easiest game to control but is not bad once you figure it out.
Again this is worth buying!!!!!!
Finally, A Beautiful PC Game Not Ruined by DRM December 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
For those unaware, the Witcher "Enhanced Edition," is probably the best computer RPG to come out since the 1990's. It's a tremendously long game, with with a great plot and a fairly witty protagonist. So many other reviewers have already stated so much truth about how good this game is, that I won't parrot their reviews any further.
One derogatory item for the kiddies and the uptight. Note the MA17 rating. Part of the hero's personality is that he's an unrepentant ladies man. As such, throughout the game, you can bed various women and get treated to a fairly artful nude of them. If that bothers you, now you've been warned. Though you try hard, I suppose you could avoid all the sex through dialogue choices.
Also another thing no one has really touched on... For once, a good game has zero-DRM to hassle you with. In the past year it's hard to think of a good PC title that didn't get tainted with DRM. I'll be glad to know that in 20 years and 10 PC's later, I'll still be able to play the Witcher along with all the other CRPG classics.
not for your average computer December 1, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
This game was too much for my three year old HP multimedia computer. Too bad I had to endure the lenghty installation process only to find out it wouldn't run on my machine. I gave the game to my son-in-law who has a newer computer.
Fun but crash prone. November 28, 2008 I picked up the enhanced version of the Witcher simply because any start up that goes back to redo and improve their first effort deserves some of my dollars. I wasn't expecting much but was impressed with what they managed to do with the second rate NWN2 engine.
The voice acting in the game is excellent as is the writing and depth of the characters. A serious lack of censorship in a game during romantic scenes is welcome and refreshing. The story is great and pretty original for a saving the world bit.
However, the game is not stable at all. It's like a drunken epileptic fat man on a unicycle trying to ride across a tight rope during a laser light show. Even with the latest updates and performance tweaks this game crashes frequently on Vista and XP. It especially likes to crash during a save, which wipes out the save and you lose that progress. So quick save becomes you friend and you constantly spam it to preserve progress for the inevitable crash.
As enjoyable as the game is, the lack of stability makes the frustration level too high to get any replay value out of it. You'll beat it just to beat it and move on to something else.
One of the Best Games Ever!! November 28, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Absolutely one of the best games I have ever played!! If you are into great storylines, fall in love with characters and love finding treasure and things like that you will love the Witcher. I get engrossed in the stories in RPG and am not into the technical aspects and the Witcher, by far, has the best storyline I've come across. It is heartbreaking at times, but enlivened by some of the funniest dialog I have ever heard, especially by the minor townspeople walking around. The scenery is awesome and the music is phenomenal. Bought the enhanced edition just so I could get the music. Geralt has the sexiest voice I have ever heard. I played it 4 times in a row, then went on to Assassin's Creed, (which sucked in my opinion) and am now going back to the Witcher again. It spoils you for other games, I swear. I loved Oblivion & Neverwinter Nights 2 series but the Witcher tops them all for storyline and realism in dialog - it's rated mature for a good reason. The fighting is fantastic and Geralt's moves are almost 'ballet-like.' The controls were also easy to use. (I still can't figure out AC). My only complaint is the long loading time - almost 10 minutes on my computer) but the wait is defintely worth it. I'm already getting excited about Witcher 2.
