3 out of 5 stars Unless you have a good reason...   November 21, 2008
This new release suffers from three main issues:

1) Speed.
2) Speed.

It's dreadfully slow. A coworker and I are running the NEW MacBook Pro high end (2.53GHz) laptops, machines released just a few weeks ago and Office 2008 is quite slow. We both figured that after upgrading our old MBPs, the speed wouldn't be an issue though to quote, "It's amazing how slow Office 2008 is, even on the new MBPs".

3) Usability compared to its Windows counterpart.

Mac Office apps don't make use of the toolbar the way their windows counterparts do. Instead, there is a "collapsed" view of all of various toolbars and it's quite difficult finding even the most simple controls - difficult enough that I'd rather run Parallels or Fusion and just run Office 2007 for Windows inside of the virtual machine on Windows XP.

Summary

While the last Mac release is pretty ancient, Microsoft has done a good job of keeping it up to date with security patches, etc. It's for this reason that I suggest you either stay with Office 2004 Mac or just make the switch to Apple's iWork suite.

4 out of 5 stars Solid and useful product   September 24, 2008

There are several little things I don't like about Microsoft's way of doing things with Office for Mac, but those things aside, I find Office 2008 for Mac to be an enormously useful and very solid suite of applications. I had some serious problems with Entourage at first, but running the software updates from Microsoft fixed those. Office 2008 for Mac allows me to work seamlessly with my Windows using coworkers running Office 2003 and it lets me use Exchange Server features more efficiently. It's solid, dependable, and feature rich.

1 out of 5 stars Office 2008 is not usable   September 24, 2008

I've put this up on a very fast mac. I NEED it to work (I've been using Office for lectures for many years). It's full of bugs (like it won't save in the .ppt format), and really slow on big files (and I'm running a dual processor quad core machine with 10Gbytes of main memory). I'm about to uninstall it and re-install Office 2004 which at least works properly.

1 out of 5 stars Word document formatting has many faults   September 14, 2008

I wish I had read the reviews above before buying this program. My Thinkpad died with a trojan. I had my backup copy of my novel I had written with Office (ms Word) for Windows. I bought a MacBook and this Office 2008 for Mac. When I opened my 260 page novel with this program, I found that ALL of my formatting had disappeared. As I tried to do something as simple as indent the first line of each paragraph, it wouldn't do it. After searching Help and spending hours of trial and error with no results, I called a writer friend who also has a Mac. He has Office 2004. We spent an hour on the phone going step by step together. When he selected all, the rulers remained in place and he could adjust the indents from there. When I, with Office 2008 for Mac selected all, the rulers disappeared. After many more experiences of this type (what worked in the 2004 version did not work in the 2008 version), I thanked my friend for his time and found a Mac Users' Group. I joined, posted my problem, and the responses I got were:
1. "Get Office 2004", and
2."Read these reviews" followed by the link to this page.

It looks like I wasted my money buying this program and having it FedEx'd to South America.

Right now I am going paragraph by paragraph and using the tab key to indent the first line of each and every paragraph of the 260 page novel.

Sincerely,
Lynette Yetter

1 out of 5 stars Only the clueless like it   September 5, 2008

Notice that the only positive reviews of this product are from people who are either new to MS Office, new to the Mac, or both.

Microsoft's recent products are so painfully awful (such truly excruciating steps backward in quality) that perhaps both PC users and Mac users should move en masse to some alternaive, such as the open source office suites. After all, if MS cannot produce either a usable operating system (see Vista) or a usable office suite, why are we still giving them any of our business?
