Just What i needed July 10, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm not an expert to compare with old versions but it is just what i need
Word dosn't like the word gentlemen July 9, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Maybe its me but when I type the word gentlemen, it changes to Gentlemengentlemen and locks-up Word.I have to do a Forced Quit to get out of it. I have tried this many times with the same result. If you are well through your document and you type gentlemen(?) without saving previously, you are in for a lot of frustration. I don't know why this happens. Computers!!!!!!!!! Other than this oddity I like the programme, haven't used it much to get totally familiar with it but it does what I need.
Office 2008 for Mac July 9, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
So far, I really like this product. I heard some iffy things about it before I ordered it. But it hasn't done me wrong yet! I use mainly "Word" for word processing - Resume work, cover letters, newsletters, calendars (for my classroom), etc. And so far it's been WAY easier than what I was using before -- Pages. I've used both this, and Office on Vista, and to me this is much easier. Vista's office is very difficult to find what you need and the last time I tried to use it - it kept printing my documents backwards. So, I much prefer Office for Mac!!
An "upgrade" in Microsoft's grand tradition July 8, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
So far, I have only used Excel:
1. As usual with a new version of Office, the interface involves more, not fewer, mouse clicks to accomplish old tasks. MS seems to think we all love digging through as many levels of interface as possible to accomplish a task.
2. I haven't seen performance this slow in Excel in 15 years. (Click. Beach ball. Click. Beach ball. Cut. Beach ball. Paste. Beach ball. Drag. Beach ball.) It even gives warnings that you may have to wait awhile before your "complex" chart will appear on screen. Go get a cup of coffee, and your chart might be ready when you get back. BTW, I'm not using an ancient machine: OS 10.4.11, 2.16 GHz Core 2 duo, 2 Gig RAM. I don't recall ever doing anything in the 2004 version that required more than a 2 second wait.
3. All of the statistical analysis tools appear to have been removed. (Great! More waiting and fewer features!)
I can't wait to try Word and PowerPoint!
Office 2008 is junk and a rip-off July 8, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've been using word processors since WordStar back in the `80s. This piece of...um...software is awful. Buggy and slow even after two patches. I do like the way it handles track changes, moving them to the right so the text reads smoothly with out embedded changes. But we're trying to use this thing to finish up a book befause that's what the publisher reqiires., and we've spent more time trying to make it work and fix problems it's created than writing! We're seriously thinking of including a comment in the acknowledgments.
They really need a Files menu selection titled 'Save As Corrupt' instead of just 'Save As.' It'd be much more accurate.
Save yourself time and aggravation and buy iWork from Apple and use their slick Pages(tm) word processor.
Just some of the problems we had:
wouldn't 'save as' properly
couldn't remove formating from section
couldn't copy text
couldn't select document by clicking, had to use menu, restart to fix
Screen draw of text mutilated, showing blocked patches of text scrolled to fix
Entering text with trck changes on didn't post chyanges, had to restart program to fix, tried save but said it couldn;'t find server. tried save as, butpoped up blank page and then hung.Relaunched Word and treid to save recovered program and it assigned a
name for an image in selected folder, complete with jpg exension
Won't `find` words in document. The'y're there, but it won't find 'em
Find search box doesn't replace entry with last word
Page won't scroll when not selected, as all other Mac documents will
Document map takes you to the wrong place
