No real reason to upgrade - except Entourage February 10, 2008

Since I first started using Microsoft Office 2008 for the Mac and wrote about it on my blog. I have noticed two things. First, one or more of the programs locks up and crashes at least once a day. That means Excel, Word, or Entourage goes toes up and dies. This doesn't happen to me with Office 2004. I should note here that I am using Office 2008 on a Mac Book with Leopard. At home, I am still using Office 2004 on a G4 iBook with Tiger. But back to the lock-ups. I cannot find any correlation between the occurrences. I have had them when I am just typing along, but also when I go to insert an attachment or save a document. Truly random.
The second thing I have discovered, and this is really evident because I switch back and forth, there is nothing in the new version that I miss when using the older version. The single thing that is really missing is the better group calendaring in the new Entourage, but since I don't use that at home it means nothing. At the office, being able to check other people's Exchange based calendars has been great. It is also nice to be able to directly open and save to the new Office format, but I think I have done that exactly once in the past few weeks. Not something worth paying for a new upgrade for. And certainly not something worth putting up with the program crashes for. And I have actually need the Excel macros that now won't run twice. So feature deletion beats feature addition 2-1.
So, all-in-all after almost a month's use I would say that unless you need that Entourage calendaring, then the new upgrade is more of a "proceed cautiously" than a "must have." In fact, the thing I am most excited about is the supposed new version of [...] that will be native Mac Aqua application instead of having to run through the X11 system. When and if that hits the wires, I may just switch entirely.

I am running Office 2003 on a XP machine and bought Office 2008 for the Mac and hoped to be able to move the Outlook information from the PC to the Mac. I found out that Microsoft has disabled functionality for exporting from Outlook that was present in earlier versions of Office, and at the same time dropped Outlook in the Mac and provided an application called Entourage. Well Entourage cannot import data from Outlook .pst files.
One can upload all their contact and calendar information to Plaxo over the Internet and put all their private information onto a server that is who knows where and who knows who will be able to access the data. Plaxo states that they actively mine the data that is uploaded to their servers.
So if someone is planning to use the Mac and thinks that by buying Microsoft Office for this platform they will have an easier time porting data than if they used 3rd party apps instead they will be disappointed.

all schools today have an exchange server and what was microsoft thinking on not adding exchange support on entourage. My 2004 student edition works with exchange. So I set back the entourage to 2004!!!! and returned it.

I just install the office 2008 for Mac and let me tell you the big surprise I have when I found this office don't has the Visual Basic and the Analysis Toolpack. So this new Excel spreadsheets is worth for what, for make better graphics, you must be joking, this is a completely false step for Microsoft and a totally dishonest behavior. At the end I found myself buying not an upgrade, it's really a downgrade for everyone who needs this software for a work in a real office. I don't have other choice than remove this office and install the Office 2004, again. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT, this is not the correct way to treat the customer, this is why we hate windows and everything that come from Microsoft.

All office products are meanwhile filled with so many functionalities, that
even power-users cannot use even the half of it.
Although each user has special needs and a different idea how features should work/look like.
As a result, you cannot find "the best office".
I was wondering: So many complains.... iWorks is better, Office 2004 is better, this is missing, that is
not good enough... and they all have it. Why buy something, when the old/other software is that good?
No assault, just wondering...
From my point of view:
The functions of the programs are better structured.
Specially Entourage is much better for my needs. It is a good facelift. The handling is much easier.
The new functions like "My day" are very helpful for me. With one look "What's up for today".
I have no problem open each attachment type.
Word offered much better tools designing a document.
In the same manner PowerPoint.
I'm not an Excel Power-User. But for my basic needs it is more then sufficient.
This product is very new. So surprises are possibly included.
But so far I can recommend this office version.
