Good choice of programs and options August 6, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
My new job requires a Windows laptop. Oh the horror! I prefer Macs but I'm learning fast. I've depended on Toast 9 for my media projects so i was natural to get Easy Media Creator for Windows. In some ways its the same but mostly it has very diffent, and many more functions. It is overall a media editing suite. I can choose any media file and find a way to edit it with this suite, including music, video and photos. Although there is an overall enhancement tool for photos, I prefer to control color, contrast, and sharpness with the tools. I thought it would just have very basic tools but I see that panaramic photos can be made. The clone tool also was unexpected. Burning disks was much the same as what I've experienced on the Mac. It has icon clicking and dragging to make discs. Toast has video streaming but I didn't see it here. However it is more of an overall media management, editing program. If you need a lot of tools and features this provides a lot in one package.
Roxio couldn't care less about their customers. August 2, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Imagine the following: you order steak and fries in a restaurant. Your order arrives but they've forgotten the fries. You send it back and you get your fries but the cook's spilt sugar over the steak. You complain and are told steak's now off the menu but you can order another dish, for which you need to pay. Reluctantly you do so as you're hungry but they get that order wrong too. This process repeats itself until the end of the evening, and when you're presented with a huge bill the waiter refuses to refund or even discuss the first items you ordered as they're no longer on the menu.
A facetious and not perfect analogy, but it does sum up Roxio's policy towards their customers. For several years they have brought out products that are generally OK but spoiled by bugs. They make a half-hearted attempt to fix them, creating more bugs in the process, then abandon the product knowing that enough people will put hope before experience and buy the upgrade. If you ask for any help you'll get the usual waffle - reinstall, turn off antivirus, get a better PC etc. Most of the time I've ended up diagnosing and/or solving the problems myself and I'm no computer genius. After a while they withdraw support altogether - fair enough perhaps if the product's really old, but not if it's never been fixed properly and you've only had it for 4/5 years. Even Microsoft offered Windows 98 support articles and updates for 8 years and no doubt they were keen for people to convert to XP.
The online support/discussion forum is a joke too. I went on there to try to get an answer to a technical question and in the process made some comments which criticised Roxio's customer care. Within a few minutes I received a tirade of sarcastic comments from the forum's resident "digital gurus" for daring to hang on to an old program rather than forking out every year for a slightly updated version of the same thing. Since I can't believe that ordinary people check the Roxio forum every 5 minutes unless they have a question of their own, it was clear that Roxio use their forum to slap down anyone who criticises them.
The product itself is OK if you're not too ambitious. I've used chiefly it to copy CDs for the car and for friends - with Media Creator you can copy discs without gaps being inserted between tracks (important for classical music and some rock albums). Taking the bugs into account, this software probably gets three stars, but the lack of support brings it down to one. So - if you just want to copy discs and rescue an LP or two, you'll probably be all right, but expect some flaws in the software and don't expect any support worth mentioning. You have been warned!
Don't feel shortchanged with the new version August 1, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was wondering if it was worth the effort to get 10 when version 9 was working so well for me. An upgrade to Vista on my pc was also scary but at this point I felt necessary. Ver. 9 and XP were a great combo so I was hoping at least I would get the same type of performance from 10. I shouldn't have worried as experience taught me that Easy Media is reliable. Once again the install was trouble free. 1-touch copying remains intact even though there are even more formats. I haven't gotten a dual layer burner yet but it does have the ability to squash down the files enough to fit onto a standard dvd. Just like I've expanded my digital needs, roxio has expanded it's programs. My ipod nano has 8GB of storage but now I have the tools to fit as much as possible. Videowave has a good cutting technique which is really fast once you get the hang of it. There are multiple choices of compression. My ipod wouldn't be as functional without this program. I can't wait to see what they come up with next.
Think Twice... August 1, 2008 Really not worth the money. I've tried twice now to create a music DVD and both times, after almost completing the process (which takes a LONG time, but that is probably not their fault) the software crashed. The rewitable DVD's I was using are now coasters - Windows says they have no data AND no room for data AND they are totally unusable.
Error Prone July 31, 2008 I want to make this review short, so I get right to it. This software offers a LOT but delivers little. I have a new and fairly fast dual-core, vista operated PC. The installation of the program was problem free, but that's as far as the praise goes. Other than fixing up music tracks and burning cd's, pretty much everything else is not working right. From the task of making a dvd from various clips to trying to convert a PAL movie to NTSC (which is a simple one button option) projects are usually interrupted by "unspecified error" messages. Using another feature in "Photo Projects" to make calendars is another constant failure as the program would ask for "insert program cd labelled and click retry". What the heck is that???? Shouldn't the program already be installed with all contents?? Anyways, after inserting the program cd, nothing would happen.... :(
With all the effort AND TIME you put in your projects to design and create them, the worst thing is an unexplained error that destroys them all. Especially when you can't even save them in a file for future retries, as the program usually doesn't let you clear the error unless you totally exit Roxio (when of course, everything that you just created gets deleted)!!!!!
In short stay away from this pricy garbage and get something else. I've tried Nero previously which worked much better for me. I'm not sure what I'm gonna use now as I'm looking for an EFFECTIVE "all-in-one" solution package. I guess I will have to AGAIN do some research..... :(
