must be great- the trick is getting it to function September 29, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Having read through the other reviews, it's clear that this a good product, for those who can get it to work properly. Unfortunately, I cannot.
I do have Windows Vista, and yes, it took FOREVER to download. I mean forever, as in hours. No big deal- it finally happened. But, not having used any previous versions, I was eager to poke around, and see what all it could do. Well, the first thing I clicked on was the VideoWave option. All this produced was a pop-up warning that VideoWave 10 has stopped working(!)
Maybe it's my laptop at fault, maybe not, but at any rate, I can't get the darn thing to work!
I cannot review something I cannot install. September 29, 2007 11 out of 15 found this review helpful
Please note that I have nothing against the Roxio company, and in fact, you will see a glowing 5 star review from me on their Roxio Crunch software. Albeit the only positive review, but I made the effort to save face.
Unfortunately, installing this software was a complete unsuccessful nightmare. Wasted hours trying my best to make it work. Error messages suggest "bad disc" and several attempts got a partial install that just froze. Having to hard boot my system and edit my UI settings was the last straw.
Since I am a reviewer for Amazon, I did contact the people responsible for sending the product for trial. They were very prompt to respond, and quite friendly. The result was a special download link of the same software along with a patch. Unfortunately, the download was unsuccessful, and corrupt. I tried again, but, the link is defective. Therefore, I am no longer downloading anything, or attempting to install this disc.
I must give this one star based on this event only. But I have promised Roxio that if they send another disc, I will attempt one more time. If I am successful in installing the third version of the product, I will edit this review. If not, it will remain at one star.
Please note that I am a Webmaster, technically experienced with computers and software for over 15 years. I mention this only to assure you I tried every method of installation possible. If I cannot install it, Mom certainly cannot. This also does not mean all discs of this software are bad.
UPDATE: I have been informed by Roxio that a majority of the discs sent to Amazon Vine Reviewers were defective. We were sent duplicates of the software, not the actual software. However, I have just received a retail version, and it has installed successfully, after four attempts. If Vine reviewers have problems with the old disc, they should uninstall and delete all mention of Roxio before reinstalling the new disc. I will further update this review after I have used it successfully.
A solid, comprehensive multi-media package September 28, 2007 22 out of 27 found this review helpful
A staggering array of features make this one of the more comprehensive multi-media development packages on the market. If you want to do something to a video, audio file, CD, DVD or picture, this program can probably do it.
That variety of features might make the package intimidating for some. Although navigation is generally good, there is a lot going on here. (And users with slower/older computers might find the software a little too greedy when it comes to system resources.) I still prefer using the programs I'm already familiar with when it comes to tasks like photo manipulation, etc. I also find it more convenient to burn CDs and the like with programs that do just that and not a dozen other things.
Still, if you're looking for a program with a broad range of functionality, that combines most of the common multimedia tasks all in one package, you won't go wrong choosing this one.
More trouble than it's worth September 28, 2007 102 out of 115 found this review helpful
Maybe it's my computer, although everything else except this runs fine. It took me over two hours just to install this, it kept locking up and stalling. I had to keep rebooting. Finally got it loaded, took forever to open it. Got it opened, started looking thru it's features and inadvertently closed it down, haven't been able to open it up again since. Have restarted the computer three or four times and the program just won't open.
I have an older version of this that runs great, this new version though is a total waste. I'll probably just end up removing it unless I can somehow get it to work. For now though it's just useless.
UPDATE: After getting a corrected copy of the software, I reinstalled it. The product does function similar to previous versions. I burned a copy of a DVD and it went smoothly and without problems. There are a lot of features in this software, unless you're a complete AV geek, you'll probably find that there's more here than you need. But some features are just good to have. The installation is apparently the most complicated aspect of this software, the instructions don't tell you, but you need to remove any and ALL traces of previous versions, most software will overwrite existing versions, this does not. I ended up having to save everything to my hard drive and install from there. This is a glitch that hopefully the people at Roxio will rectify soon.
Once you get over the hurdle of installation, you're on your way.
Version 10 is a Vast Improvement over Earlier Versions September 27, 2007 16 out of 20 found this review helpful
Roxio Easy Media Creator Suite version 10 is a vast improvement over some earlier versions of this package. Besides the obvious power that version 10 brings with a much wider suite tools, this version provides a much friendlier interface and design that is more responsive; versions 5 through 7 were somewhat clunky and at times very slow and unresponsive. Version 10 is even an improvement over version 9; while version 9 was more robust than previous versions, the interface was still a little lacking in design and intuitiveness - version 10 has improved the interface to the point that it quick user friendly.
The audio tools for ripping CDs and editing audio files is straight-forward and easy to use. I wish there were a little more control over filenaming of ripped files, but it is good enough to deliver what I need. The standard CD and DVD burning of data or music is the best out there and always has been; of all of the burning software I have used, the Roxio Creator Classic has always been and is still the best of bunch.
I was pretty familiar with versions 6 and 7, which were before the recent boom in consumer video editing and mastering, and version 10 has a whole host of tools to aid in this endeavor: VideoWave, an editor application that supports HD; MyDVD, for authoring slick DVDs; an Audio/Video Conversion tool for converting between formats; and CinePlayer, a pretty nice video player. I have a film and video background and have used some fairly high-end video and audio editing tools; and, while Roxio's video editing and mastering suite is not quite that level, it will deliver a straight-forward video creation experience for the home user that wants to create slick productions of their daughter's recital or the family vacation to the Grand Canyon or Paris.
Some other useful features: a photo editing application that is not quite Photoshop Elements, but will get the job done; a nifty Plug & Burn tool that will turn a videotape into a DVD in one step; and Assistant to help with burning legacy LPs and Cassette Tapes; Disc Gallery for cataloging offline disks such as CDs and DVDs; a bunch of pre-made themes for DVD menus and labeling; and much more.
Bottom line: If this is your first media creation package, then this is definitely the right choose; if you are using a version older than 9, then this is a must upgrade for all the reason you can think of; and if you are currently using version 9, then it isn't an essential upgrade, but you would most likely be happy if you do.
