Despite a somewhat disappointing ending this game is without a doubt one of the most indepth FPS available. The stealth that must be used to accomplish missions will forever change what is considered when levels are built for FPSs.
A new era begins!! August 19, 2001 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Well, after playing thief, I reply this game, for people who ask What is the best game you have ever played?. Thief is a classic, and it is not a game for faint hearted Half-life /counter-strike people. The game is not designed for people who run around madly with a blazing gun, dying every 10 seconds.. You have to wait, you have to look, you have to be witty and quiet while playing the game... You can turn off torches by firing a water arrow, and you can sneak through the darkness you created.. Walking on metal ground attracts guards, while walking on a carpet is the ultimate way of sneaking.. After playing this game , I am no longer afraid of darkness; as darkness will be your only ally..
Read all the great reviews but... July 20, 2001 0 out of 9 found this review helpful
I finally got around to playing Thief and, given all its wonderful press, I ended up disappointed. Yes, I know the graphics engine is outdated now but even when it came out it must not have been that great. I found the constant stealth factor to actually not be that fun and found it very aggravating at times. Sometimes it takes ALOT of playing time to negotiate and area correctly without alerting the guards. I also found the player controls a little more stiff or crude or less responsive or something than most games of this nature. I played through alot of the first level and then gave up. Maybe it was a blast when it came out but now there are alot of other games that will give me much more fun and excitement. I will give Thief II a try (I already own it) but I feel it will be more of the same.
Best game ever !!! (so what if it's been used it is) June 20, 2001 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
... it takes a lot of strategy and cunning (and the knowledge to know when to save). If you're unsatisfied w/ the graphics use a voodo banshee graphics card. If you don't like re-playing levels on higher difficulties try one of the sequels. the best parts are the gadgets and the challenge.
An alright game June 18, 2001 1 out of 12 found this review helpful
Alright, just about everyone I know said this was one of the best games ever. I've never agreed with them and I do not believe I ever will. The graphics aren't exactly mind blowing nor does the storyline keep you very entertained. You just go, hide, go, hide then run, hide. Not exactly the game to buy if predominately you enjoy shoot em up or fighting games. So save yourself some money and purchase some great games such as Half Life or Resident Evil.
