Great game August 13, 2002 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Playing this game makes me really appreciate the hard work that goes into making graphics for the Playstation 2. But I didn't buy Tomb Raider Gold for the graphics. I bought it because of Lara Croft. For some reason it's a pleasure to have her under your command. Combine Lara with running through tombs and shooting things and you have a fantastic video game. It's not the best in the world but it's good enough.Graphics: 3.5 Yes, the graphics are horrid. But hey, it's the first game of the series and the people making it didn't know how much they could do with a simple polygon. The biggest problem is the flat background. It is highly detailed but that's what causes the problem. Since the background is so flat and the surface is so detailed it's difficult to tell where a ledge is at. Taking one wrong step could have you falling to your death. Lara was actually done very well. She's a bit choppy but her body movement is impressive. Sound: 0.0 What? 0.0? Well, it's because I have no sound with my version of Tomb Raider. I know it's not my computer's fault so I lay blame on the game. Control: 3.5 Another one of the problems that plagued Tomb Raider games. The control isn't THAT bad but there is much improvement needed. Jumping is a major downfall. The downfall is ... you FALL DOWN ... a LOT! There are many holes to jump over in the Tomb Raider games and Lara doesn't always jump when you tell her to. Also she doesn't always jump where you want her to. Jumps have to be made perfectly otherwise you'll have to start over from scratch or die. Another thing is the actual combat. Enemies will charge you while you're shooting at them and if they get too close it is difficult to get away so you can shoot them some more. Bad camera movement and bad controls are to blame. Fun Factor: 4.0 With all the games faults it is still a great game to play. The storyline stinks but so what? You get to play Lara Croft and shoot things! What more could you ask for? I look forward to seeing Miss Croft make her way to the PS2.
An Outstanding Game Certain to Become a Classic June 10, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
From the ruins of Rome to the futuristic setting of Atlantis, Tomb Raider takes the gamer through a variety of wonderful worlds. Unlike its sequels, it stays in the tombs and out of other settings. I believe that it is one of the best games ever made, and it certainly is a classic. However, I believe that its sequels in many aspects overshadow it. The scenery in Tomb Raider is better than most games, although it is mostly cubed and flat. The game play and plot are wonderful, and the graphics and sounds are acceptable. However, the artificial intelligence enemies are less than intelligent, and the gamer is often left feeling underestimated with the ease of some of the puzzles. Laura's moves are limited, and the weapons supply is less than perfect. The bonus levels present in the gold version are a lot of fun to play, but they add little to the game's plot. I would recommend this game to any fan of the Tomb Raider series and to the average gamer. However, I do feel that other versions have better qualities. Tomb Raider II offers wonderful AI and is perhaps the best for a gamer seeking combat. Tomb Raider III combines the better aspects of the previous two, and Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation offers the best plot and character mobility. If you are looking to stay in the tombs, or if you are not into puzzles, stick with this game. However, don't miss out on the other great qualities the Tomb Raider series offers.
Tomb Raider FUN! July 10, 2001 In this game, you get to explore tombs, caves, and buildings. Not only is it challenging, but it's fun too! Once you start playing this game, you won't be able to turn it off, GARANTEED!
I love all tomb raider games! July 7, 2001 Im a big TR fan and i have all the games(including TR gold) expect the expansionpaks and all of them is good
The game crashed on me. April 21, 2000 4 out of 12 found this review helpful
This game crashed on me several times during playing and the sound was virtually non-existant.It did not support my PCIQ64D card. Can't recommend. Disappointing. Also I noted that Lara was very lonely in the game scenario. Hardly any monsters to combat. Nothing.
