Very good, but other options exist... November 27, 2008 Now there are several detailed reviews already exist here. I just wanted to give concise review with possible alternative.
1. The software generally does what it claims to be. Your computer will be well-protected (from viruses, spywares, spam, etc). Although, not every program performs equally well, but is good enough.
2. Since it comes with 2 yr protection for 3 computers, it is a good deal overall. You do not have to worry about the security for next 2 years.
3. WHILE the program is overall good (in some cases very good), there are FREE alternatives are out there -- if you look for them. Sure, you have to download several programs and manually update some of the programs, but it is FREE.
So it comes down to this: Am I gonna spend money on something that I could download for FREE even though it may be a hassle? If you already have or know good FREE programs, stick with them. But if you do not want to go through the hassle of downloading (and testing) several FREE programs, then I do recommend this program.
does its job as a firewall/antivirus but that is about it. November 26, 2008 This is an ok product. I work with antivirus software as part of my job, and this product is firmly in the middle. As far the antivirus part goes, it does its job well. I was disappointed to see how often it wants the machine to be rebooted after an update to virus definitions though. Good software these days should only rarely require a reboot after an update. I do like how it has some different modes, like a gaming mode that cuts back the scanner's footprint while you doing cpu intensive stuff. For instance when I am working in photoshop I have the bitdefender shift into this mode as I need as much cpu and memory as I can get.
The so called system optimization tools are really no better than other registry cleaners and defrag tool available out there. Often for free in most cases. They score higher because of their convience in being include in a suite of products.
In my opinion a firmly average product.
Good, but free is better. November 22, 2008 I like this, yet I prefer Spybot S&D which does the same thing yet is free.
A Complete Suite With Liberal Support And Service November 21, 2008 "BitDefender Total Security 2009" is the last of three computer protection suites that I have recently reviewed. For each protection suite, I focused on the same 5 questions that I assume other "non-techies" like me might be interested in. (1) How easily and efficiently is the loading process and related to this, (2) How much impact does the loaded software have on the continued smooth and efficient operation of the computer compared with past performance? (3) Does it do what it claims to do in an efficient and efficacious manner? (4) Are there any new risks or problems to concern the user? And (5) Is there any significant reason to select the software over the competition aside from brand familiarity and price point.
My explorations have revealed that there is enough similarity and generic "sameness" among the suites that ultimately question 5 should be the real decision maker for most average users. The "BitDefender" suite includes an antivirus/antispyware module, anti-phishing and antispam protection, a firewall, and parental control, along with a number of other management resources such as tune-up tools, an encryption module that protects and stores your personal information and files, online backups, and a home management module to protect the entire home. This may be the most complete suite in all that it offers.
Comments: The Online Backup provides 2 gigs of encrypted storage to a protected website. The Home Network Management Resource seems to be a big asset for those with several computers in the home by essentially allowing one central computer operator to be a site administrator to manage "BitDefender" for all the computers on-site. Like some of the other suites, it has a file vault which I found a little cumbersome because everything had to be encoded and encrypted with password operated opening and closings of the vault for each storage decision. There are simpler storage vaults available. Another newer feature is a gamer mode which recognizes when previously identified games are operationalized so that" BitDefender" automatically makes appropriate program adjustments to the suite.
Installation was quick and efficient on both computers I loaded although I had to reboot and reload once on one of them. The opening interface is very basic and easy to navigate but I liked the ability to rely on the defaults for everyday home use or turn to the "Advanced Controls" for more experienced users to fine tune their settings. So far, "BitDefender" has appeared to do a good job of finding and/or isolating viruses and questionable material while not impeding proper applications and material. The firewall seems more than adequate and more effective with more applications than others I have tried.
Running scans gave me mixed results as to speed. One of my units ran scans faster than the other but overall, plan on about 20-25 minutes for initial scans on normal computer loads. Both computers did not seem to drag or noticeably be affected by the scans running in the background.
My assessment: Any of the three computer protection suites I tested would be acceptable for the casual user--some have different bells and whistles than others. "BitDefender" seemed to be the most complete with the most extras in one package including tune-up tools. Maybe the biggest reason to select this suite over its competitors is a very liberal 2 years of service and support for 3 different in-home computer--that is hard to beat in the current market.
Buggy software November 20, 2008 I don't know what's wrong with software companies these days, but this is yet another software package that causes big problems during installation. I have installed it on Vista a few weeks ago and it was behaving strangely - it kept on downloading MSXML SP2 update. I have decided that I will wait with reviewing it until I had time to reinstall my Vista.
Re installation did not make any difference. BitDefender takes forever to install, forever to download updates and once again it keeps trying to get me the previously mentioned update again and again. Other than that it made my connection icon disappear from time to time, while its own icon shows there are critical issues but if I click to open the control center nothing happens. Spam filter looked promising with Bayesian learning engine, but for some reason it would not put spam in my junk email folder but insisted on making its own. Even worse news is that it made my PC start up to last for minutes instead of seconds. Web browsing became sluggish too.
After uninstalling BitDefender I got blue screen of death and had to do a repair and a system restore, even though my Vista was freshly reinstalled...
I cannot recommended it at all. In comparison McAfee Internet security 2009 performs so much better.
