4 out of 5 stars Overall good product, had some install issues   November 20, 2008
I'll start off by stating the installation of Bitdefender: the process went semi-smoothly for installation on my high-performance home server that is on 24 hours and runs largely headless (without a monitor). The system is an AMD X2-6000 dual-core with 2GB of RAM running under XP Media Center. The major problem during installation was that the program's firewall was rammed down my throat with no toggle to deactivate it during the install period. The result was that I was locked out of my own server's network when the install was complete. I had to manually click on the options by going to my server's mouse and monitor. Major blunder on part of the software company's installation for this program.

A bunch of typical malware options were made available to me; most were kept on by default. I choose deactivate quite a few since many of them (i.e. email protection) was not needed as I do not do these activities over the system. I simply wanted some antivirus protection against trojans that can attach themselves to the system unknowingly. The menus were relatively straightforward to figure out how to select things without having to refer to another source. This is as a brief summary appears below the screen when you point your mouse to a selection box. Nice. I particularly enjoyed the option of disabling the splashscreens and any update/news notices. This is important because when my system reboots automatically those kinds of splash screens can screw up my boot process which has a complex set of scripts that are timing-dependent.

CPU usage is a major consideration with any antivirus program so that was a concern to me. Although my server doesn't max out its cpu use, I have done a lot to minimize electricity consumption of the system. Wasted cpu cycles increase power requirements so I do not want wasteful software running all the time. This is particularly an issue as my system processes several dozen files in batches every minute of the day for its tasks. With active virus scanning enabled, these files are analyzed for viral activity. When no file activity is conducted, it seems that the antivirus system consumes an average of only 1-2% cpu power. With active scanning going on during the batch processes that occur, cpu usage climbs up to 6-13% for a few seconds. This isn't too bad really, and acceptable (so far) to me.

As for updating the definition files, they were pretty quick to download, no complaints there. The registry key is good for 3 computers for 2 years. Although some may be dismayed at the 2-year figure, I am quite impressed that the company is honest about this. Some other company's don't mention it at all and you may think it's an infinite lifetime license, but in reality it doesn't work that way as they will obsolete your license when a major version changes in the software. Bitdefender deserves credit for their honesty.

Overall, it looks like I'll be keeping this antivirus program on. I will knock off one point due to the install issues highlighted earlier. They really need to let the user select the ability to disable the firewall during the install as many will install the software remotely.

3 out of 5 stars Frustrating installation process, but great customer service   November 18, 2008
I started out feeling very frustrated with BitDefender. When I installed BitDefender, it did not work immediately. I kept getting an error message that said the "services" were unavailable. Nothing I did would get BitDefender to work properly. It wouldn't even let me uninstall it. Despite being an administrator using Vista, it still told me that I didn't have permission to uninstall it.

After much frustration, I gave in and contacted BitDefender customer support. I was quite surprised by the help I received. I emailed customer service and an agent actually responded (as opposed to just getting a form letter in garbled English as a reply). The agent instructed me on fixing the problem. He looked at the list of programs installed on my computer and told me that a program called Arcsoft was causing the problem. (Arcsoft is software that typically installs in the back ground while you're installing a new printer.) I uninstalled Arcsoft and BitDefender worked perfectly.

Upon installation, I performed a scan for viruses and spyware. This took approximately 1 hour on a half filled 500gb hard drive.

BitDefender seems to work quietly in the background, as anti-virus software should. Further, it has a multitude of protection options which can be turned on or off. After turning an option off, the user does not get pop up warning like in McAffe.

I'm not quite sure how to rate this product. It seems to do a nice job as a virus protection program. However, it dismays me that the company released a product that is incompatible with very common software. Customer service was very helpful and assured me they were working on a fix which will allow BitDefender to work with Arcsoft (It is due out the week of November 17, 2008).

3 out of 5 stars Only stayed on my laptop for 3 days-bye-bye   November 18, 2008
I received this security packaged and was very excited to install it and did so on my laptop. I had no problems with the install, it was quick and painless. However read on for the rest.

PROS:
Easy to setup and use.
Updates quicly and loads up fast upon startup without slowing down other apps too much.
Has the registy cleaner function. I like that.

NEGATIVES:
It is very very protective of what you plug to any port and does cause unwanted side effects.
This is when it got bad. I had this installed and used it, put it through the paces and all the sudden while I was on Ebay I received a warning popup box at the bottom of the screen and it said warning a virus has been blocked but could not remove it. It did not know its name or even where it was. I tried updating it and ran scan several times and the scan said it was clean. But now everytime I startup the laptop I get the warning about the virus it blocks but does not remove, know its name, or where it is. I contacted Bitdefender and got some really lame excuses about fixes in next production with no help at all. I decided enough of this. I downloaded Onecare safety scanner and ran it and it found the virus right away and cleaned it no problem. That was enough for me. I removed Bitdefender and cannot recommend it since they seem to just throgh the product out there without any real support.

5 out of 5 stars A BitDefender product that provides a solid protection for up to 3 PCs   November 18, 2008
The Good:

* A wide array of tools and scanners, as well as firewall and virus protection
* Gamer Mode/Laptop Mode customizes your experience
* Optional online back-up tool
* 2-YEARS/3 PCs subscription makes this a great value

The Bad:

* With the in-your-face alerts, it feels clunky at times
* File Vault feature is cumbersome

The Bottom Line:

A great protection from BitDefender that is also a great value as you get not one, but 2 YEARS of protection for up to 3 PCs. While the protection is very powerful, it could feel clunky at times when it warns you something minor needs to be adjusted. The File Vault feature is a great addition to this suite. However, it makes you scratch your head at times. Instead of simple folder drag and drop feature, it insists on making a vault with an assigned letter and size, following by asking which file(s) you want to put in, which makes the whole process feel cumbersome. However, that does not take away from the fact that the overall protection you get is very powerful.

4 out of 5 stars Good protection for the price   November 14, 2008
While Bitdefender doesn't have the reputation companies like Norton or Mcafee do, they are still ranked high for the most part by customers who use their products. This Total Security package is a nice bit of software, with a lot of bells and whistles you'd expect from a much higher-priced company.

The Parental Control feature is nice, though probably any teenager with a bit of computer savvy could figure their way around it. Still, if you have little kids in the house it's a nice way to make sure they surf safely. This package also includes Bitdefender's Antivirus product, a spyware blocker, a firewall, and more. The nice thing about this is that it allows you to cover 3 PCs for 2 years each, which is above and beyond what most of the other companies offer.

If you're wanting an all-in-one package that won't break the bank, this is fine. You could replicate most of this with freeware products such as Comodo Firewall Pro, AVG Antivirus, and Spyware Terminator, but this is an easy installation for people not comfortable with keeping separate products up to date. The update process usually doesn't require a reboot, though it occasionally does. Your computer may experience a slowdown during an AV scan, but if you schedule it for the middle of the night and leave your computer on it won't be a problem.

Bitdefender doesn't have the success rate of Norton for blocking viruses, but it does a good job most of the time. If you're only a casual web surfer, this should be enough. If you're into really seeking out new websites out there, you might want to step up to the next level with another product.
